Deadline May 10th: Young Photographers Alliance Summer Mentoring Program

Young Photographer’s Alliance
Call for applications: Summer Mentoring program 2013
Deadline: Friday, May 10, 2013

Calling all students! YPA has finalized our locations for this years’ mentoring program. We have a total of seventeen teams set up around the world.

The program takes place over the summer beginning June 1st, ending August 15th pairing up students with leading industry professionals. Teams will meet for eight two hour sessions, (days and times to be determined by teams at first meeting).

The results of the program will be featured in an exhibition in NYC and will be prominently displayed to a worldwide audience. You will gain experience and insights from your mentors, create new work for your portfolio, develop professional business skills, and with your team will create a local campaign to promote yourselves and your work.

All teams will worth on a common theme this year titled “Escape”. We invite you to explore what the word means to you.

What does participation in the program involve?

  • You will meet with your mentors for six to eight two-hour sessions over the course of ten weeks (see timetable below for program dates).
  • You and your team will set the meeting times based on your mutual schedules.
  • You will identify a subject based on the theme “Escape” which you will photograph outside of meeting times.
  • You will discuss and edit your work together with your team and deliver three final images and a short essay of no more than 300 words.
  • You will work with your team to document the entire process.
  • You will learn to write a creative brief; learn about the business of photography and together with your team, develop a localized promotional campaign as a part of your final deliverables.

Before you apply
Please ensure that:

  • You are aged 18-29, currently enrolled in a college photography course or a recent graduate.
  • You can commit to what’s involved in this program (see above).
  • You can be reasonably flexible about your availability for team meetings (six to eight over ten weeks – see timetable below for program dates). We cannot offer any advance assurance about scheduling of team meetings: each team schedules times and dates to suit their individual needs.
  • You are able to organize your own transportation to the team meetings. (Unfortunately we do not have any travel grants for this program.)
  • You will have use of a working, digital SLR camera, at least 8 megapixels, and compatible lens(es). If you are borrowing a camera, please take the time to familiarize yourself with it fully before you start the program.
  • You understand that submitting an application is no guarantee of acceptance.

How to apply

  • Join as a YPA21 member (which costs just $21 – more details here).
  • Proceed to the mentoring application.
  • Five to eight of your best images. Does not have to represent theme; they should simply be representative of your work.
  • A letter of recommendation from a professor, mentor, advisor, or employer; this should make reference to your photographic abilities.
  • A description of your photographic experience: classes taken, competitions entered, etc.
  • A short statement of how you might approach the theme. You will not be restricted to the ideas you propose; we just want to get an idea of your creativity/approach.”
