“The Society for Photographic Education is a nonprofit membership organization that provides a forum for the discussion of photography-related media as a means of creative expression and cultural insight. Through its interdisciplinary programs, services and publications, the society seeks to promote a broader understanding of the medium in all its forms, and to foster the development of its practice, teaching, scholarship and criticism.

SPE student members can apply for scholarships to offset the cost of attending SPE’s 2014 national conference in Baltimore March 6-9, 2014. All awards include a 2014 national conference fee waiver and a one-year membership to SPE.

SPE Awards
Ten SPE Awards are offered and feature a $500 travel stipend to attend the national conference.

The SPE Award for Innovations in Imaging
The SPE Award for Innovations in Imaging is open to all eligible students working primarily with digital technology and is designated for work only possible because of emerging digital technologies-no alternative processes or gelatin silver prints. A project description describing how the work is possible as a result of emerging digital technologies is required as part of the submission process. Jurors will seek to award work that demonstrates the most innovative, unique, and freshest uses of digital technologies.

Eligibility
Applicants must be currently matriculated students enrolled at a post-secondary institution as an undergraduate or graduate student majoring/concentrating in photography not graduating before the end of the academic year 2013-2014.

Applicants must be student members of SPE or become members before submitting their scholarship application. Visit www.spenational.org for information.

Applicants are not eligible to receive the same award for two consecutive years, and cannot receive two awards in one year.

Jurors
This year’s jurors are SPE national board members serving on the Awards and Recognition Committee: Erika Gentry (chair), Claude Baillargeon, Amy Holmes George, and Lupita Murillo Tinnen.

  • A cohesive body of work with no more than FIVE images. Images around 1280 x 1280 px @ 72 ppi are ideal for good image quality and fast upload
  • A succinct artist statement of 200 words or less
  • A statement addressing how attendance at the conference will benefit you, as well as an overview of prior involvement with SPE or other arts organizations
  • A description of the conceptual basis of your work and its technical qualities, including a description of processes used
  • A brief resume, including name, address, phone number, email address and current institutional affiliation, and educational and professional experience
  • Contact information for a current photography professor (include name, title, email, and phone number)
  • Applications that do not fulfill all requirements may be eliminated from the competition.”

“The MFA: NOW exhibition will highlight exceptional photographic, video, and book works by MFA students from the Northeast. This exhibition is in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Society of Photographic Education as part of SPE’s Northeast Regional Conference: Expansion held at Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY Nov 1-3, 2012. The exhibition will be installed in VSW’s Siskind Gallery.

The reception for the exhibition on November 2, 2012, will be the closing event of the SPE NE conference as well as be open to the public and part of Rochester, NY’s First Friday exhibition network for November 2012.

Juror
Lisa Sutcliffe has been Assistant Curator at SFMOMA since April of 2007. She works on permanent collection rotations, special exhibitions, and photography acquisitions. From 2006-2007, Ms. Sutcliffe was the Koch Curatorial Fellow at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, where she co-curated group exhibitions of contemporary art and photography from New England.

Submission Guidelines
This call is open to MFA students working in Photography, the Moving Image and/or Books who will be enrolled in MFA programs during the 2012 – 2013 academic year. Students must be enrolled in program in one of the following sates: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The application fee is $30.00 to submit 1-5 images from the body of work or up to 3 video clips. Each video submission is to be no longer than 3 minutes in length.

“The Society for Photographic Education is pleased to announce The SPE Art Sinsabaugh SPE Creative Artist Project Support Grant to recognize professional members’ exceptional creative photographic work and support their efforts. The award of $5,000 will be granted to one member in 2012, its pilot year. This is a new benefit for members and has been noted as a goal of SPE’ strategic plan drafted in 2011.

Current professional level (non-student) members of SPE are eligible to apply. The grant was created to support a new project, or to continue an existing project in traditional still photography, digital video/film, multimedia, installation, or work created for the web.

“SPE is accepting proposals for the 50th annual SPE national conference Conferring Significance: Celebrating Photography’s Continuum, March 7-10, 2013 in Chicago, Illinois.

Proposals topics are not required to be theme-based, and may include but are not limited to, imagemaking, history, contemporary theory and criticism, multidisciplinary approaches, new technologies, effects of media and culture, educational issues, funding, and presentations of work in photography, film, video, performance and installation.

Current SPE members are eligible to submit a proposal for consideration. Individuals who have presented at two SPE national conferences since 2010 (Philadelphia) are not eligible. To join SPE visit https://www.spenational.org/members/join

Presentation Format Descriptions

  • Graduate Student – short presentation of your own artistic work and a brief introduction to your graduate program (must be enrolled in graduate program at time of submission)
  • Imagemaker – presentation on your own artistic work
  • Lecture – presentation on historical topic, theory, or another artist’s work
  • Panel – a group led by a moderator to discuss a chosen topic
  • Teaching and Learning (new category this year!) – presentations, workshops, demos that addresses educational issues, including teaching resources and strategies (syllabi, videos, assignments, readings, class prep/setup, and power point presentations); curricula to serve diverse artists and changing student populations; seeking promotion and tenure; avoiding burnout, and professional exchange.

The Freestyle Crystal Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement in Black and White Photography
The Freestyle Crystal Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement in Black and White Photography is generously sponsored by Freestyle Photographic Supplies. Freestyle’s goal in offering this award is to provide greater support for students working in traditional black and white silver imaging and alternative processes. One student will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize. All light-sensitive processes, including alternative processes (Van Dyke brown, platinum, albumen, gum bichromate, cyanotype, kallitype, salt, liquid emulsion, lith printing, hand coloring, bromoil, modern day tintype, etc.) are eligible for this award as long as the end product is a gelatin silver or handmade alternative process print. No digital prints accepted.

As an added bonus the High Museum of Art Atlanta is exhibiting, Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century, during the time of the conference.  The exhibition will be up until May 29, 2011.

Exhibition Description:
One of the great portraitists of the twentieth century, Henri Cartier-Bresson’s photographs captured people and events that changed the world. Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century is the first comprehensive retrospective of the French photographer’s work since his death in 2004, and it spans more than thirty years of his career.
