Call for Submissions: THE LOOK3 FESTIVAL SCHOLARSHIP for Emerging Photographers

PhotoShelter, the leader in websites and business tools for photographers, is excited to present two grants to emerging photographers to attend LOOK3 in Charlottesville, VA June 13 – 19, 2016.

The grant includes:

To qualify, participants must be working photographers who have been shooting on their own professionally (i.e. being paid for their work) for eight years or less.

To apply, submit up to a 300 word essay that:

  • Describes your academic/photographic accomplishments
  • States your goals for your photography career
  • Explains why attending LOOK3 will help you achieve your goals

Please also include:

  • Your name, where you live, your age, and the year you began shooting on your own professionally.
  • A link to your online portfolio.

Note:  If you have already registered for the event and/or made travel plans, you are still eligible! We will take care of reimbursements if provided with receipts.”

Deadline June 30th: Ian Parry Scholarship 2012

Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. That was 20 years ago, he was just 24 years of age. The Ian Parry Scholarship was created by Aidan Sullivan, then picture editor and Ian’s friends and family in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.

Each year we hold an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24. Entrants must submit examples of their work from their portfolio and a brief synopsis of a project they would undertake if they won. The prize consists of £3,500 towards their chosen assignment £500 to those awarded Highly Commended and Commended.

Submission Guidelines

  • Completed entry form.
  • A portfolio with no more than 12, low-resolution digital photographs, either a photo-essay or individual photos. (Please follow the instructions on our website carefully).  You must include a caption for each image in the metadata with your name, contact details.
  • A detailed written proposal of your chosen assignment.  It should be noted that this written section is considered extremely important.  The judges will need to be impressed by your ability to produce a convincing assignment proposal as well as your photography skills.”

“The Center for Book Arts is pleased to continue the Scholarship for Advanced Studies in Book Arts. In 2012, the Center will award two to three scholarships to individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the artistic endeavors in the book arts. The purpose of this program is to provide opportunities to emerging artists committed to developing careers in the book arts field, and to further the growth of this artistic profession. The award includes a cash stipend plus a materials budget and 24 hour access to the Center’s printing and binding facilities for a full year. Artists also receive a tuition waiver for courses throughout the year, planned in conjunction with the staff.  Scholars will be required to complete an artist project by the end of the scholarship period, with an exhibition in our gallery space and public presentation the following autumn.

Artists are invited to submit applications postmarked by May 15, 2012.”

“This program is open to current full-time students and recent graduates (within 12 months) of an Undergraduate or Masters program at an accredited institution in the United States. Applicants selected to receive scholarship must register and participate in a Connect 2012 three-day Workshop in order to redeem scholarship check. Scholarship recipients will be recognized and presented with their scholarship check during one of the four Evening Presentations during the Festival.

Several Festival sponsors have graciously offered to “adopt” an emerging photographer by contributing a $500 rebate to help defray some of the costs for a select group of talented emerging photographers to attend the Palm Springs Photo Festival, April 1 – 6, 2012.

Submission Guidelines

  • Letter of recommendation
  • Digital portfolio of no more than 20 images.  Your file must be in PDF format and must not exceed 3MB. Make sure your full name is in the file name along with the word ‘portfolio’ (ex: Bob_Smith_portfolio.pdf).
  • Brief description of your work.
  • 500 words or less statement explaining why you should be selected as one of the honored Emerging Photographer Scholarship recipients at Connect 2012. Your proposal must be uploaded in either .pdf or .doc format and not exceed 1MB. Make sure your full name is in the file name along with the word ‘proposal’ (ex: Bob_Smith_proposal.pdf.”

APA/Lucie Foundation Scholarship Program

$5,000 Photography Scholarship
Submission opens November 1, 2011, the deadline is April 30, 2012
Submission is free.

“The APA/Lucie Foundation Scholarship is available to a deserving established professional photographer for a specific project in the amount of $5,000 through its partnership with the Lucie Foundation. APA desires to support and encourage growth and professional development, and is excited to partner with the Lucie Foundation for the 2012 grant cycle to show its commitment to advancing professional photography.”  This is the first year they are offering the award.

Professional photographers interested in applying for the scholarship will be asked to write a one-page description of the project for which they are seeking funding.

Submission Requirements
Please read the following information carefully to make sure your application material is complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered:

1. Project Proposal. This proposal should include the following:

-Project Start and End Dates
-Desired Disbursement Dates (at least two)
-250 word description of your project
-Your Plan for completing the project (i.e. how you intend to approach the project and how you intend to use the scholarship money)
-Five Project Deliverables (e.g. 20 prints of existing work), listed in order from most to least pertinent and immediate to the project.

2. A one-page biography and/or CV
3. Twenty digital images.

“SPE student members can apply for scholarships to offset the cost of attending SPE’s 2012 SPE National Conference in San Francisco March 22-25, 2012. All awards include a 2012 national conference fee waiver and a one-year membership to SPE.

Ten SPE Awards are offered and feature a $500 travel stipend to attend the national conference.

The SPE Award for Innovations in Imaging in Honor of Jeannie Pearce
The SPE Award for Innovations in Imaging, in honor of Jeannie Pearce is open to all eligible students working primarily with digital technology and is designated for work only possible because of emerging digital technologies-no alternative processes or gelatin silver prints. A project description describing how the work is possible as a result of emerging digital technologies is required as part of the submission process. Jurors will seek to award work that demonstrates the most innovative, unique, and freshest uses of digital technologies.

The Freestyle Crystal Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement in Black and White Photography
The Freestyle Crystal Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement in Black and White Photography is generously sponsored by Freestyle Photographic Supplies. Freestyle’s goal in offering this award is to provide greater support for students working in traditional black and white silver imaging and alternative processes. One student will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize. All light-sensitive processes, including alternative processes (Van Dyke brown, platinum, albumen, gum bichromate, cyanotype, kallitype, salt, liquid emulsion, lith printing, hand coloring, bromoil, modern day tintype, etc.) are eligible for this award as long as the end product is a gelatin silver or handmade alternative process print. No digital prints accepted.

This year’s jurors are SPE national board members serving on the Awards and Recognition Committee: Christina Z. Anderson (chair), Sama Alshaibi, and Liz Wells.”
