“From 1936 through 1951, members of the Photo League created a unique environment in which to explore photography as a tool and as an art. But beyond the League’s meeting halls and classrooms, an image world of tabloids, picture magazines, newsreels, advertisements, and museum suggested other ways to approach and use photography. This lecture looks at the League’s accomplishments and legacy as photographic images came to play a central role in mid-century life, desires, and discourse.

Author, editor and curator Marvin Heiferman is on the faculty of the ICP-Bard Program. His writing has appeared in Artforum, Bomb and publications produced by MoMA, ICP and the Whitney Museum of American Art.”
