PhotoNOLA Portfolio Review 2018: Registration opens/closes this Thursday, September 6 at 10:00 AM CST (sharp!)

Participation in this portfolio review is filled via an on-line system on a first-come, first-served basis, and it takes about 5 minutes to process the registration of 70 photographers (+ a small waiting list). This year’s roster once again reflects the diverse opportunities for photographs today, from curators at public and corporate collections, sage international AIPAD-level gallerists and private collectors, photo editors, photo book publishers, heads of non-profit spaces that make a difference in their communities and more.

During the broader Festival there will be fantastic exhibitions on view at both the Ogden, NOMA and local galleries, curator walk-throughs, one-day workshop offerings, my annual education seminar – this year tacking strategizing a social media plan for marketing your work – a ride range of programming for your benefit. You can’t decide to attend later – it will fill within minutes of registration opening this Thursday at 10 a.m. Central time. See you there?

“In his presentation, “Landscape and Memory“, Binh Danh will show work from his community-inspired installations and discuss his photographic processes with an emphasis on his daguerrotype printing and work with indigenous botanicals. Danh is currently collaborating with Louisiana Master gardeners, creating new work in preparation for an installation at the Arsenal during PhotoNOLA 2018.

This event is co-hosted by LSM and PhotoNOLA.

Fee: $25 for NOPA members + $60 for non-members

New Orleans Photo Alliance members are invited to submit work for consideration in CURRENTS 2014: NOPA Members Showcase. The exhibit will open in December at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, in connection with the 2014 PhotoNOLA festival.

This annual exhibition was created to showcase contemporary photographic work created by NOPA members. The 2014 show will include work by as many as fifteen Alliance members, featuring several images by each selected photographer.

CURRENTS 2014 will open on December 4 and run through January 5, 2015. The opening reception will be held on Friday, December 5.

Eligibility: Submission is open to all current members of the New Orleans Photo Alliance. Applicants may join at time of entry.”

“Review registration will be limited to 70 photographers and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.  Once registrations are filled, we will begin a waiting list.

PhotoNOLA’s Portfolio Review program offers photographers the chance to present their work to influential members of the photographic community. Twenty-minute face-to-face meetings with gallery owners, editors, publishers and museum curators from throughout the U.S. provide photographers with networking opportunities, critical advice, and guidance for bringing their work to a larger audience.

Reviews are a wonderful opportunity for photographers of all levels to begin important relationships with established professionals in the photographic field. Sharing work with reviewers and fellow photographers can result in new opportunities to exhibit, publish and sell work.

PhotoNOLA Portfolio Reviews will take place Dec. 5 & 6, 2014 at the International House Hotel, conveniently located in New Orleans Central Business District, two blocks from the French Quarter.

Guidelines

  • Photographers should digitally submit a collection of 10-20 photographs in JPEG format, scaled at 1280×800 (150 ppi).
    * Horizontal images should be sized at 1280 pixels wide at 150ppi.
    * Vertical or square images should be 800 pixels tall at 150ppi.
  • Jpeg must include artists name and image title in the file name, and should be numbered sequentially in the order you wish them to appear. Please use the following format: Doe_John_01_ImageTitle.jpeg.
  • Place jpegs in a folder. Save folder as a ZIP file.
  • Pay entry fee at cathedralnola.com/photonola then proceed to next page to enter contact information and upload your submission.”

“The Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans (CAC) presents Unfolding Images: A photobook exhibition juried by Seth Curcio, associate director of Pier 24 Photography. All (18+) are encouraged to apply. Unfolding Images will take place December 2 through December 30, 2013 at the CAC. Organized to celebrate the printed image in book form, through photography and repurposed images, Unfolding Images will be designed as a functioning library and reading room, allowing visitors the opportunity to review the selected books in person at the CAC during PhotoNOLA 2013. All books will be evaluated based on the strength of the individual photographs or images, the editing and sequencing of images, layout and design, and the photobook as a physical object. Both self-published and commercially published books, created after January 1, 2012 are eligible.

All publications selected for the Unfolding Images exhibition will automatically be placed into the CAC’s photobook library. Books not selected for the December exhibition will be considered for placement in the CAC Photobook Library for future exhibition & public viewing opportunities.”

“Founded by Larissa Leclair in 2010, the Indie Photobook Library (iPL) is an archive of self-published and indie published photobooks. This includes DIY, photobooks independently published and distributed, photography exhibition catalogs, print-on-demand photobooks, artist books, zines, photobooks printed on newsprint, limited edition photobooks, non-English language photography books and more.

Larissa will be here with a selection of 33 titles from the iPL collection, curated on the themes of migration, cultural identity and transition. The exhibition will be on view for three days only – Friday Nov 30 through Sunday Dec 2 – in the CAC’s atrium.

On Friday afternoon Larissa will speak about the iPL’s journey and mission in the CAC’s Spun Café. The event is free and open to the public.

The Indie Photobook Library Pop-Up Exhibition was curated by Larissa Leclair, Jan Gilbert and Russell Lord.”

“Noted photographer Henry Horenstein will give a lecture discussing his life and work over the past 40 years. A student of Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind, Henry will highlight his early interest in history and how it has impacted his photography. He will show images from several photographic and book projects, covering a variety of subject matter from country music, to animals, to burlesque.

Henry has published over 30 books, including classic textbooks Black and White Photography, Beyond Basic Photography, and Digital Photography; and monographs, Racing Days, Animalia, Humans, Show, Close Relations, and his most recent updated edition of Honky Tonk: Portraits of Country Music, which he will feature in his lecture. Henry’s photographs are collected and exhibited internationally. He lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and teaches at Rhode Island School of Design.”
