“Photographers Zoe Strauss and Allan Sekula; Peter Barberie, The Museum’s Brodsky Curator of Photographs, Alfred Stieglitz Center; and exhibition-catalogue contributing author Sally Stein, Professor Emerita, Art History and Film and Media Studies, University of California, Irvine, discuss Strauss’s photography and the ten-year project she held under Interstate 95 in South Philadelphia. The conversation will address the political and social concerns behind Strauss’s practice and how she garnered a mid-career retrospective at the Museum only twelve years after picking up a camera.”

This conversation is being presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Zoe Strauss: Ten Years.  This exhibition opens January 14th and is up until April 22, 2012.

  • Application form and image list with titles, medium, year, and size
  • Artist statement and bio
  • Proof of residency
  • Portfolio of ten prints; print, slide or digital:
    • “Print Portfolios are strongly encouraged over the submission of digital files. Please do not submit print portfolios larger than 20×30 inches. If your work is larger than 20×30 please submit a smaller portfolio along with one sample print and the intended exhibition/display size.
    • Slide or digital file format. For digital files please submit JPEGS at 300 dpi, 4×5 inches formatted on a CD-ROM. All work samples must be labeled with your name, phone #, image title, date, size, and media. For CD-ROM submissions, please include an image script identifying the listed information.  *We will not accept submissions via email.”

Peter Barberie, The Brodsky Curator of Photographs, Alfred Stieglitz Center, and Matthew Palczynski, Staff Lecturer for Western Art, discuss the legacy of the 1980s culture wars and the challenges of exhibiting controversial artworks in a museum.”

The Exhibition
Unsettled: Photography and Politics in Contemporary Art presents work by nine artists–David Wojnarowicz, Nan Goldin, Peter Hujar, Barbara Kruger, Zoe Leonard, Robert Mapplethorpe, Andres Serrano, Lorna Simpson, and Carrie Mae Weems–who used photography to address some of the most controversial political and social issues of the late 1970s through the early 1990s, including feminism, racism, the AIDS crisis, and gay activism.”
The exhibition is located in the Julien Levy Gallery in the Perelman Building.  It be on view April 9th to summer 2011.
