Call for Entries: Moving Walls 23: Group Exhibition
Deadline: Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at 5:00 pm EST

“The Open Society Documentary Photography Project is soliciting proposals for our next exhibition, Moving Walls 23, opening in June 2015 at Open Society Foundations–New York.

We are seeking photo-based documentary projects that address a social justice or human rights issue in any region where the Open Society Foundations are active.

Since 1998, Moving Walls has showcased over 200 photographers in 22 group exhibitions—at our offices in New York, Washington, D.C., and London—that align with the Open Society Foundations’ mission to advance human rights and social justice.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Any emerging or veteran photographer who is working long-term to document a human rights or social justice issue may apply for Moving Walls.
  • We welcome all applicants, and especially encourage those from underrepresented groups (e.g., applicants from Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East; people representing marginalized groups; and women). All submissions will be considered. The Open Society Foundations does not discriminate based on any status that may be protected by applicable law.

Purpose and Priorities
We are particularly interested in work that provides a fresh perspective and expands the visual language of documentary photography. Therefore, we invite photographers and artists to submit documentary-based work that uses new or creative visual strategies, investigative/storytelling approaches, or technologies. We seek applicants who reflect a diversity of global perspectives, especially those that are under-represented in mainstream narratives and media. Five to six projects will be selected.

We will cover the cost of: printing/framing; $2,500 participation fee; travel cost reimbursement/coverage to attend the opening reception and related events (attendance required); and return shipment of photographs.

Call for Submissions: Audience Engagement Grant

Deadline: Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 5:00 pm EDT

“The Open Society Documentary Photography Project invites proposals for the 2014 Audience Engagement Grant Program, revised and updated this year to include two tracks of support for project development and project implementation.

We are seeking documentary photographers, photo-based artists, and socially engaged practitioners who use their work to go beyond representing a human rights or justice issue to creating change.

Track One: Project Development
Grantees will receive funding to attend an Open Society–organized retreat in December of 2014. This event will be designed in collaboration with Creative Capital’s Professional Development Program, whose nationally recognized workshops provide participants with essential practical tools and strategies to help them move their project and career goals forward. Attendees will become part of a larger Audience Engagement Grant cohort, with opportunities to connect both during the conference and after.  Track One Guidelines PDF.

Track Two: Project Implementation
Grantees will receive funding to execute (or continue executing) their projects as well as attend December’s retreat. Track Two Guidelines PDF.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Documentary photographers, photo-based artists, and socially engaged practitioners who use their work to move target audiences beyond the act of looking, to directly participate in activities or processes that lead to change around an issue.
  • Individuals who establish meaningful partnerships with others committed to realizing change and who bring a complementary set of skills and expertise.
  • Projects that use photography or photo-based art creatively and innovatively to reach a project’s unique audience.
  • Projects with goals that are ambitious, yet realistic and achievable.

Guidelines
Download and carefully review each track’s guidelines here for more detailed information on eligibility and criteria. Submit your applications online at: osf.submittable.com/submit.

If you have questions about which track you should apply for, or if your project is eligible, please contact Anna Overstrom-Coleman at: anna.overstrom-coleman@opensocietyfoundations.org (include the subject line: “Audience Engagement Grant”).

We will hold a webinar information session on Monday, May 19, 2014. Please check our Facebook page in early May for more details on this event.”
