September 5th: Registration OPENS for the 2012 PhotoNOLA Portfolio Reviews

PhotoNOLA:  The 7th Annual Festival of Photography in New Orleans takes place November 29th – December 2nd, 2012.

Portfolio Review Registration Opens Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 10:00 am CDT

 

Review registration is limited to 65 photographers and is first come, first served.  A waiting list will be started once those slots are filled.  The registration fee is $475 which is paid at the time of registration.  Last year one-half of the spaces were booked on the first day of registration.

Two days of educational offerings will be held on November 29th (Aline Smithson, and Lori Waselchuk) and November 30th (Sasha Wolf, and myself); details to be posted on www.photonola.org soon.

This 100% volunteer event is hosted by the New Orleans Photo Alliance, and is one of my favorite events of the year.  The combination of portfolio reviews, educational offerings and exhibitions, combined with the relatively intimate scale (and of course it’s in NEW ORLEANS!) make for a memorable experience for all involved.  Consider coming early for the continuing education offerings and attend the kickoff PhotoGALA, and stay late to have more time in one of the world’s great cities.  I hope to see you there!   – MVS

“Students in this workshop will learn to construct two different book structures: the hard bound pamphlet binding and the Japanese bound book. Students will learn which structures are best for presenting your work while considering the tools and equipment you possess at home to later make your own books of content. Students will learn to use materials such as various weights of paper, Canapetta book cloth, Davy binders book board, Irish linen thread and PVA glue.

Workshop cost is:
$30.00 for members
$50.00 for non-members
$75.00 for non membes that wish to join NOPA (includes workshop fee and discounted membership)”

“The Clarence John Laughlin Award was created by the New Orleans Photo Alliance to support the work of photographers who use the medium as a means of creative expression. It honors the life and work of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985), a New Orleans photographer best known for his surrealist images of the American South. The Clarence John Laughlin Award grants one $5000 prize annually to a photographer whose work exhibits sustained artistic excellence and creative vision.

Eligibility
Both emerging and established photographers residing in the U.S. may apply. The New Orleans Photo Alliance invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to apply. Still images made from all photographic processes, both traditional and digital will be considered. There are no restrictions on subject matter or genres. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that include old and new processes, mixed techniques, and challenging personal and emotional statements are all welcome. Still photography or photographic techniques should be integral to the works submitted.

Submission Guidelines

    1. $25 application fee, to be directed through Paypal immediately after your application has been successfully uploaded.
    2. A portfolio of 10 – 20 images.  Images can originate in any format but must be submitted digitally through our online application process.
    3. Each image submitted should be in jpeg format, 12 inches on the longer side, sized at 72 pixels per inch, saved at the highest setting available (usually 10 or 12). Name your files with your last name then first name and image title using underscores to separate. Example: Doe_Jane_ImageTitle.jpg
    4. Each image submitted will also require a title, dimensions, materials (specifying print medium, i.e. toned silver gelatin print) and year created.  Each image file and its accompanying information will be entered and uploaded one at a time.  You will have the opportunity to review and rearrange the sequence of your portfolio after all files have been uploaded.
    5. A concise description of work, limited to 260 characters maximum, which will be visible to the juror alongside your image portfolio.
    6. A written statement explaining your images, process and intent, 500 words maximum.  A Word document should be copied and pasted into the appropriate area at the beginning of the application form.
    7. Biography or resume/CV.  A Word document file should be copied and pasted into the appropriate area at the beginning of the application form.”

Scott Dalton, winner of the 2011 Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography grant, will present his award-winning project So Close, So Far: Daily Life and Cartel Violence in Ciudad Juárez.

Dalton’s project explores daily life in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, a city in the midst of a vicious cartel drug war. Averaging over 3,000 murders a year, Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, has become one of the most dangerous cities on earth.

Tom Rankin, the Director of the Center for Documentary Studies, writes, ‘Scott Dalton’s images reveal the hard edges of conflict while also illuminating the eloquent textures of ordinary life. Dalton’s images suggest the sense of loss that relentless violence so firmly delivers.’”

Lori Waselchuk, an award-winning photographer and recipient of several regional and international grants, will lead a workshop that will cover three stages of grant-writing: preparation, proposal development and follow-up. Waselchuk will talk about her own experiences, local and national grant opportunities, and about building partnerships for projects and seeking non-traditional funding”

“The Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography (MPS Fund) was created by the New Orleans Photo Alliance to honor the life and work of Michael P. Smith, one of New Orleans’ most legendary and beloved documentary photographers.  The MPS Fund awards one $5000 grant annually to a Gulf Coast photographer whose work combines artistic excellence and a sustained commitment to a long-term cultural documentary project.  Both emerging and established photographers residing in the Gulf Coast states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida are eligible to apply. The subject matter for the proposed project is not limited to the Gulf Coast region.

Application Requirements

  1. A portfolio of 20 to 25 images. These images can originate in any format, but you must submit them digitally via the online application process (opens February 1, 2012).
  2. Each image file must be in jpeg format at 72 dpi and 720 pixels wide (10 in). Save your images at the highest setting available (usually 10 or 12). Name your files with your last name, then first name and a title. Use an underscore to separate the names and title. At the end of the file name, add a sequence number starting with 01. Example: Doe_Jane_The Farm_01.jpg, Doe_Jane_The Farm_02.jpg, Doe_Jane_The Farm_03.jpg. You must add caption information and the year that you created the image. Enter and upload each image file and its accompanying information one at a time. After you have uploaded all of the files, you will be able to review and rearrange the sequence of your portfolio.
  3. A concise description of your work (2-4 sentences), limited to 260 characters maximum, which the jurors will see alongside your portfolio. The short description will be asked for near the end of your entry process. It is not the project proposal.
  4. A written proposal of not more than 500 words, explaining your project’s scope and significance. Please include your plans on how you would use the grant. A Word document should be copied and pasted into the ‘Statement’ box at the beginning of the application form.
  5. A biography or resume/CV of not more than 500 words, describing awards, publications and other career highlights. A Word document file should be copied and pasted into the ‘Resume’ box at the beginning of the application form.
  6. A $25 application fee will be directed through PayPal immediately after you have uploaded your application.

PhotoNOLA has updated their website for the Sixth Annual Festival of Photography in New Orleans happening December 8-11, 2011.  More information about this year’s festival will be added to the website soon, but their calendar will give you a good idea of this year’s schedule of events.
