Emmet Gowin studied under Harry Callahan at RISD in the late 1960’s. He first gained attention with his intimate portraits of his wife, Edith and family. Beginning with a trip to Washington State soon after Mt. Saint Helens erupted, Gowin began taking aerial photographs. For the next twenty years, Gowin captured strip-mining sites, nuclear testing fields, large-scale agricultural fields, and other scars in the natural landscape. Gowin received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1974, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in 1977 and 1979, a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 1993, and the President’s award for Distinguished Teaching in 1997. He retired from the visual arts department at Princeton in 2010. Gowin’s work can be found in museums and private collections worldwide as well as in six monographs on his work published over the course of 30 years.
