“Since 1980, The Center for Photography at Woodstock has provided regional photographers with significant recognition and support through the Photographers’ Fellowship Fund award. As of 2009, one $2,500 grant is awarded annually to a regional artist working in photography and related media.

To date, CPW has awarded over $74,500 in Photographers’ Fund Fellowships to 86 artists. Past recipients include Kenro Izu, Andrea Modica, Lucinda Devlin, Craig J. Barber, Tanya Marcuse, Isaac Diggs, among others.

Eligibility
Only artists working in photography who live in the following New York State Counties are eligible to apply to the Photographers’ Fellowship Fund: Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster, Warren, and Washington. Proof of residency is required.

Artists working in photography, digital imagery, mixed media and or artwork which incorporate photography are welcome to apply.

Submission Guidelines
To enter, please send:

  • a portfolio of 10 prints OR a CD-ROM formatted with ten JPEGs*
  • the application form (click here to download)
  • image list detailing titles, medium, year, and size (page 2 of the application form)
  • an artist statement and bio
  • proof of residency (i.e. drivers license, mail, utility bill)
  • a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for the return of your work**
  • Submission must be received by September 20th.  Send to:

“Award-winning photojournalist Ron Haviv has produced images of some of the most important conflict and humanitarian crises that have made headlines around the world. Numerous museums and galleries have featured his work, including The Louvre, United Nations, and The Council on Foreign Relations. Co-founder of the photo agency VII, his work is published by magazines worldwide.

He has published three critically acclaimed collections of his photography: Blood and Honey: A Balkan War Journal, Afghanistan: On the Road to Kabul and Haiti:12 January 2010. Haviv has been the central character in three films including National Geographic Explorer’s Freelance in a World of Risk that explores the hazards inherent in combat photography. In addition, Haviv regularly speaks about his work on television and radio such as ABC World News Tonight, NBC Nightly News, The Charlie Rose Show, Good Morning America, BBC, CNN and NPR.

“The Woodstock Artist-in-Residency Program is designed to support artists of color working in the photographic arts who reside in the United States that would benefit with access to time, facilities, financial, critical, and technical support. This activity is created with an emphasis on supporting artists working in the photographic arts who are at the brink of their careers and promising talent. All of us lead very busy lives – the drive for this program is to free the artist from the busy routines and demands of everyday – and to provide a sanctuary for creativity.

Each year CPW offers 7 residencies for artists of color and 1 “critical studies residency” for a curator/critic of color.  A-I-R’s receive:

  • accommodations at a historic artist residence located .5 miles from CPW and the center of Woodstock’s business district.
  • 24/7 access to CPW’s workspace facilities (including black-&-white darkroom, digital imaging stations, and library)
  • critical and technical support
  • stipend for food and travel, and honorarium
  • exhibition and related opportunities”

“CPW’s annual Photography Now exhibition celebrates the plurality of photography. From traditional to digital, all photographic techniques and approaches are welcome. Straight photography, fine art, narrative, documentary, landscape, social issues, still life, mixed media incorporating photography, photographic installations, and digital imaging and collages – are all eligible! Eight to ten photographers will be selected to be featured in the group exhibition in CPW’s gallery from April 5 – June 15, 2014.

Juror
Julie Grahame is the publisher of aCurator.com, a full-screen photography magazine, and the associated aCurator blog, named one of the ten best photo sites by the British Journal of Photography and one of Life.com’s top 20. She is also the editor for Photography&Architecture.com, and represents the Estate of Yousuf Karsh.

Exhibition & Purchase Prize
Selected artists will have their work exhibited in CPW’s gallery from April 5 – June 15, 2014.

One print by a photographer from the exhibition will be chosen and purchased for CPW’s Permanent Print Collection, held at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz. CPW’s Collection holds over 1,750 works of art by such program artists as Larry Fink, Robert Heiniken, David Maisel, Mary Ellen Mark, Lilo Raymond, and Steven Shore, amongst others!

Submission Requirements

  • 6, 10, or 20 images (uploaded to CAFE specifications)*
  • Artist Statement (up to 2 pages) or Bio (up to 1 page)
  • Appropriate entry fee
  • Proof of eligibility for students and seniors (age 65 and up)

*Image upload instructions provided by CAFE once you are a registered user. Exhibition print sizes will not determine eligibility, however will be considered when selecting the number of framed pieces that will be included in the exhibition.

Entry Fee

  • $50 for 6 images*
  • $60 for 10 images
  • $100 for 20 images

*$30 for Students/Seniors with proof of status for 6 images. For Student/Senior discount coupon code, email info@cpw.org with proof of eligibility.

For students: Send a copy of the front and back of your current validated student i.d. confirming enrollment (dates must be visible.) If I.D. is not dated, send a copy of unofficial transcripts along with the front and back of student I.D.

“Join CPW for a very special portfolio review event where you’ll have the opportunity to show your work to some of the most distinguished and important professionals in photography today. Held in NYC, in a supportive setting, you will have your work reviewed by five noted luminaries in one-on-one twenty-minute sessions. Reviews can provide you with constructive feedback, new directions, and perhaps that jolt of inspiration to take the next step. Testimonies from previous participants included: “great feedback by committed and engaged reviewers,” “informative and inspirational,” “one-of-a-kind, unpretentious, and fun,” “a great place to trade ideas,” “encouraging, helpful, and insightful,” “I got what I was looking for and made connections,” “open minded, honest, and thoughtful,” “it changed me and helps break barriers to the NY art world.”

In the JUNE session you will meet Susan Carlson of the International Center of Photography; Clinton Cargill of The New York Times Magazine; Nicole Caruth of Art21; Alan Rapp of ARStudio; and one other reviewer to be announced.

Additionally a representative from CPW will be reviewing work at each session.

“WOODSTOCK A-I-R is a workspace residency program designed to support artists of color working in the photographic arts who reside in the United States with access to time, facilities, financial, critical, and technical support. CPW has created a easy to follow application form with accompanying image script for you to use in submitting your entry. A completed application form is required. Entries that do not include the application form will not be accepted.

  • 6 images: $50 ($30 student/senior (65 or older) discount in this category only – proof of status required)
    10 images: $60
    20 images: $100
    Residents of Canada & Mexico – please add $15 to any of the above categories. International applicants – please add $20.
  • CD-ROM ENTRIES –
    • Title each file with your “last name_ image title.”
    • We accept JPEG files at 300 DPI, no larger than 5×7”.
    • Include a separate printed image list with your submission information detailing titles, date, dimensions, and media. See page 2 of application form for the image list.
  • No submissions will be accepted via email. Artist statements and resumes are encouraged, but not required. If you would like your submission returned to you, you must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
  • Please make checks payable to CPW.  AMEX, MC, & Visa credit cards are also accepted.
  • As a way to thank you for entering and keep in touch, you will receive a one year CPW membership when you enter. Current memberships will be renewed for one additional year.
