“Photographer/filmmaker Lauren Greenfield is renowned for her remarkable insights into youth culture, body image and the effects of consumerism.  In this presentation she will screen and discuss the digital feature she directed as part of the BEAUTY CULTURE exhibit. The 30-minute documentary explores our cultural and historical obsession with beauty and the way beauty has been defined and sought after in contemporary culture. This film and Greenfield’s work look at the universally intoxicating quality of beauty, as well as its oppressive effects on female body image. In addition to the film, Greenfield will also show new photography as well as relevant works from her career.”

Unique Beauty, An Evening with Kwaku Alston
Thursday, September, 22, 2011, 6:30-8:00 pm

Tickets will be released today, September 15th, at 9:30 am PST. Tickets are free; 100 available.

“As an award-winning celebrity photographer, Kwaku Alston has made a career of working with beautiful people. As a humanist, he does not restrict his definition of beauty to traditional Hollywood standards. Instead, he focuses on connecting with the spirit of the individual and bringing out his/her unique beauty.

Among those Alston has photographed are First Lady Michelle Obama, Brad Pitt, Drew Barrymore and Teri Hatcher.

In his IRIS Nights lecture, Alston will show a selection of his celebrity and personal portraits, as well as discuss symbols of beauty in our culture and how he responds to or draws influence from them. Alston will also reflect on his experiences with how beauty is defined in creative industries such as advertising.”
