“The 2016 Photojournalism Grant empowers photojournalists by supporting their work, mission, and career. Visura awards one winner with a $5000 cash prize. The winner will be announced at the 2016 Lucie Awards in New York City on Sunday, October 23, 2016.

The Grant has a three-tiered mission:

  1. recognize and support professional photojournalists worldwide;
  2. support an ongoing or a new project;
  3. get the work of photojournalists in front of key industry editors and buyers worldwide.

General Requirements
Your application must include the items listed below. There is no entry fee during the application process.

  • Who can submit: Photojournalists worldwide. All Applicants must have an active PLUS, PRIME or GUILD membership account to submit for consideration.
  • How to submit: All submissions are made via a “Project” created from your Visura’s dashboard.
  • What to submit: Each Entry consists of a project made up of a series of images (minimum of 15 images, maximum 35), a short synopsis and a long written reflection about the project
    • Image Specs: minimum 1600px on the longest dimension (22.5 inches @ 72 dpi, JPG format)
    • Text: Include a short synopsis and a long written reflection about the project, in first-person, saved as the Project Text. Ex. What is the story or project about? Where does it take place? If more than one place, please specify. If completed, when was it photographed? If ongoing, when did you begin the story/project? What is the story you want to convey?

Application Procedure

  • All submissions are made via a “Project” created from your Visura photographer’s dashboard
  • Projects may be ongoing or a recently completed project
  • Image size: minimum 1600px on the longest dimension (22.5 inches @ 72 dpi, JPG format)
  • Include a written reflection, in first-person, as the Project text (see below for details)
  • Limit one project per photographer
  • Projects may be ‘published’ or ‘private’ within the Visura system

“The Prix VIRGINIA is organized by the Association SYLVIA S. It recognizes the work of a woman photographer.

It is awarded in accordance with the following rules:

The Prix VIRGINIA, awarded every other year, beginning in 2012, is open to all living professional women photographers, regardless of age or nationality, with the exception of photojournalisms and advertising. Photographs submitted for the Prix VIRGINIA must not have been exhibited in France. Requests for assistance with projects, reporting, or exhibitions will not be considered.

The Jury is composed of eight key cultural figures who deliberate and designate the Winner. Members serve one two-year term, with the exception of the President and a representative of M, the magazine of le Monde.

Awards

  • 10,000€ from the Association SYLVIA S.
  • Publication of the winner’s work in M, the magazine of Le Monde.
  • Be-pôles, which publishes the collection Portraits de Villes will offer the winner carte blanche to photography the city of her choice.
  • Exhibition in L’Espace photographique de l’Hôtel de Sauroy in Paris, supported by the generous partnership of he lab Central Dupon Images.
  • L’Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe publishes in its season program the work of one of the 11 photographers selected by the Jury.
  • Editions Filigranes publishes a box-book with the winner’s and the Jury’s choice photographies.

All informational and promotional materials used during these exhibitions and publications must include the mention “© Prix VIRGINIA 2016”.

The Winner will be announced during a formal, public ceremony by the President of the Jury at a date announced after the deliberations in Paris, in the presence of the Winner, the Jury, and the media.”

“The Project Launch is granted to an outstanding photographer working in fine art series or documentary project. The grant includes a cash award to help complete or disseminate the works, as well as providing a platform for exposure and professional development opportunities.

This grant is awarded to complete or nearly completed projects that would benefit from the grant award package. It requires signature of a contract to participate in an exhibition during Review Santa Fe.

“The Review Santa Fe Photo Festival, November 3-6, 2016, is the premier juried portfolio review event in the world. Considered one of the most important events for photographers who seek career advancement, this conference and exhibition series is designed to facilitate relationships between photographers and leading industry professionals looking for new work.

“The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a panel of experts, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist.

The Smith Grant was established in 1978 following the death of Gene Smith, the legendary American photo essayist. It is today the most prestigious honor in documentary photography. Every year it recognizes a photographer who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to documenting the human condition in the spirit of Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion.

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, INC., a not-for-profit corporation qualified under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, independently administers the grant program that provides photographers with the financial freedom to carry out or complete major photographic essays. For 2013, the amount of the grant will be $30,000. An additional $5,000 in fellowship money will be dispersed, at the discretion of the jury, to one or more finalists deemed worthy of special recognition. Awards will be presented in a ceremony held in New York City in early October 2015.

The Jury
The Fund’s Board of Trustees appoints a three-member international jury every year. The jury meets twice. At its first session it reviews all the applications and proposals, and selects finalists primarily on the basis of the substantive (and intellectual) merit of their project. The finalists are only then asked to submit a comprehensive photographic print portfolio, to write (if necessary) a more detailed and focused proposal, and to answer questions about their project.

At its second session, the jury reviews the new materials and proceeds to select the grant recipient and the beneficiaries of the fellowship money.

Submission Guidelines
You must register on this website by clicking the ‘Apply for Grant’ link on the side navigation. There is a $50 fee for grant consideration. No preliminary materials will be returned. Applicants should submit:

  1. A Bio and/or CV submitted as a PDF not to exceed 2 pages. Name the file with your first and last name and use an underscore to separate the names. At the end of the filename add CV.
  2. The Project Proposal submitted as a PDF and not to exceed 2 pages. Name the file with your first and last name and use an underscore to separate the names. At the end of the filename add PP. This proposal should be titled and lead with a one paragraph executive summary of the project. The proposal following should be concise, journalistically realizable, visually translatable, and humanistically driven. The applicant must affirm that the proposed project is ongoing.
  3. IMAGES: Applicants can submit up to 40 images total. These should consist of representative images from the project being proposed to the W. Eugene Smith Fund. The applicant can include in his/her submission, past work that represents the candidate’s vision and his or her ability to execute the project being proposed to the fund. The images must conform to the following specifications: JPEG files with 1500 pixels on the long dimension saved at 72 dpi. Name the files with your first and last name and use an underscore to separate the names. At the end of the file name add a sequence number starting with: 01. Example: John_Smith01.jpg, John_Smith02.jpg, John_Smith03.jpg.”

“The New Orleans Photo Alliance (NOPA) is pleased to announce the names of the 14 finalists for the 2013 Clarence John Laughlin Award.

The Clarence John Laughlin Award was instituted by the New Orleans Photo Alliance in 2010 to support the work of photographers who use the medium as a means of creative expression.  It honors the life and work of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985), a New Orleans photographer best known for his surrealist images of the American South.  The Clarence John Laughlin Award grants one $5000 prize annually to a photographer whose work exhibits sustained artistic excellence and creative vision.

Russell Lord, the Freeman Family Curator of Photographs at the New Orleans Museum of Art, is the 2013 juror. The 134 submissions were prescreened by Arthur Roger, of Arthur Roger Gallery, Victoria Ryan, photographer, educator and NOPA Board Member, and Crista Dix of Wallspace Gallery, who narrowed the entries down to 100 portfolios. From these, Mr. Lord selected 14 finalists whose work he will review in print form to select a single winner. The New Orleans Photo Alliance will announce the 2013 CJL Award recipient on October 1, 2013.”

“The Cord Prize is an international contemporary art award established to support and acknowledge the practice of early and mid-career visual artists. The award comprises an individual first prize of $10,000, second prize of $1,000 and third prize of $500. Additionally, twenty-two artists will be selected for online exhibition and a piece of writing will be commissioned from the award jurors.

Photography has become a universally accepted, unchallenged, medium of contemporary art. Concomitantly, photography’s capacity to influence our everyday lives has become exponentially important with the ubiquity of visual social media and the opening up of the possibilities for us to communicate and disseminate our photographic images independently of institutional support.

Jurors
Diana Edkins has been a visionary in the fine art photography world since 1969. Over the course of her eclectic career as a curator, editor, author, and advisor, she has published over 28 books. From 2002 until 2009 she held the position of Director of Exhibitions and Limited-Edition Photographs at Aperture where she produced, organized and curated over forty exhibitions.

Charlotte Cotton is one of the mostly highly respected and well-known writers and curators of photography today. She has held positions including curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum, head of programming at The Photographers’ Gallery, London and head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The inaugural Cord Prize invites early and mid-career artists who are working within the field of photography to apply.

  • 16 images from a body of work. Images should be:

“Launched in 2009, The Award is one of a plethora of opportunities for young photographers delivered through the educational partnership between Magnum Photos and IdeasTap. The IdeasTap Photographic Award is open to 16-30 year olds and is designed to help promote the careers of emerging photographers.

The Award has two overall winners (one from each age group), but also offers opportunities to a shortlist of 12 individuals (six from each age group). All 12 shortlisted applicants will receive a mentoring session with a Magnum Photographer, £60 of Blurb book vouchers and £150 to have their pictures printed. Over six weeks, they will be encouraged to enhance and develop their projects. Their photographs will be framed and included in an exhibition in September 2012.

At the exhibition, six finalists will be selected – three from each age group. The six finalists will each receive £1,500 to shoot their dream photographic project, create a multimedia ‘Magnum in Motion’ style project and will receive a second mentoring session from industry professionals.

Finally, a winner will be picked from each age group. The overall winners of the Award will each receive £5,000 and sought-after internships at Magnum – the younger category winner at Magnum’s office in London and the older winner to work with our multimedia team in New York.

In addition, all applicants will receive a £20 print on demand book voucher through our ongoing partnership with Blurb Books.

To enter the competition you must submit four photographs in response to ONE of the following themes:

  • Human Behaviour
  • My Backyard
  • History
  • Blue

We will be looking for creative and striking photographs that demonstrate photographic skill and understanding. The four photos in your portfolio must demonstrate your ability to tell a story with your images.

Applicants must be IdeasTap members and membership is free. In the first round of judging, the images will be viewed via IdeasTap portfolio’s.”
