With the increase in publishing options today, many artists are considering the path towards publication. A book acknowledges personal accomplishment and recognition, but what are the hurdles one must overcome to get published? And how do you successfully market your book?

MVS, coauthor of Publish Your Photography Book, will share her knowledge of publishing and help artists understand the similarities and differences between having your book produced by a large (trade) publisher, a “small press” or by self-publication. She will examine issues relating to contracts, fund raising, marketing, and distribution of photobooks, as well as the role of limited edition publications.

During this workshop, MVS will be joined by two special guests: LOLI KANTOR will discuss contract decisions and RANIA MATAR will share her trade and small-press publishing experiences.

A book signing with all three authors will be held at the conclusion of the workshop..

Loli Kantor’s long-term project There Was A Forest examines the cultural landscape of Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union. Her self-published artist book of this work was released in 2010 (edition of 500 copies, out-of-print); University of Texas Press will publish her first title in 2013. A traveling exhibition is being planned to accompany the publication.

Rania Matar’s work focuses on women and girls both in the Middle East and the US. Matar’s first book Ordinary Lives was published in 2009 by Quantuck Lane Press (a division of W. W. Norton). A Girl and Her Room is her second book and was recently published by Umbrage Editions. Exhibitions are scheduled to coincide with the book publication and signings.
