Reception and book signing to follow panel discussion.

“On the Razor’s Edge: Between Documentary and Fine Art Photography is a featured exhibition at the New York Photo Festival in DUMBO, Brooklyn, May 16-20, 2012.

The artists are leading documentary and editorial photographers working today and include Bruce Davidson, Rina Castelnuovo, Lori Grinker, Platon, Reza, and Eugene Richards. The show is curated by Glenn Ruga.

The exhibition concept explores how photographs based on representations of our world can exist both as documentary and as fine art, and how the meaning of the work can be transformed in each environment. Each of the artists represented here produce powerful work on important global themes. The emphasis on the meaning of this work can vary if the work appears in a commercial art gallery, non-commercial art gallery, book, museum, or on the internet.

This panel will discuss the issues of form and content in documentary photography. Following the panel will be a reception for the Razor’s Edge exhibition, as well as for The Art of Documentary exhibit in the mezzanine level of powerHouse Arena.
“Barbara Tannenbaum, curator of photography at the Cleveland Museum of Art, invites submissions for the first museum exhibition to focus on print-on-demand books. DIY: Photographers & Books will be on view August 11th – December 30th, 2012.

A new golden age of the photobook has dawned, thanks to digital printing technology and web-based distribution services that allow rapid, inexpensive production of books in quantities from one copy to thousands. This exhibition is the first museum show to focus on the impact of print-on-demand publishing on contemporary photographic practice. Instead of images on the wall, the room will be dominated by a long table where a visual banquet of more than 75 photobooks will await the visitor. Several examples of historic and unique books will be in cases, but for most of the volumes, touching, reading, and re-reading will be encouraged. The books will be by regional, national, and international artists. Plans include a computer station where visitors can try their own hand at producing a photobook. This exhibition honors the 60th anniversary of Aperture magazine and press.

Submit your print-on-demand photography book to the following address before May 31, 2012:

Further questions: E-mail photography@clevelandart.org.

“Photographer and media artist LaToya Ruby Frazier uses the conventions of social documentary to probe and upend traditional narratives of urban growth and the triumph of industry. Exposing the underbelly of corporate practices—rapid de-industrialization and outsourcing, environmental negligence, and inner-city gentrification—Frazier’s work examines the crises of postindustrial communities and the racial divisions wrought by capital. Tonight she is joined by filmmaker Tony Buba, sociologist Sharon Zukin, and composer and sound artist Damian Catera for a multimedia exploration of the myth of the “urban pioneer” within her hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania.”

This performance is being presented in conjunction with the Whitney Biennial 2012, which includes LaToya Ruby Frazier, on view until May 27, 2012.
