Deadline April 1st: “The Other Hundred” Inaugural Photobook Call

The Other Hundred
Photobook Open Call for Entries
Deadline: Monday, April 1, 2013

Submission is free.

“We want you to send us your photographs of The Other Hundred – individuals from around the world, accompanied by an explicatory text telling their story – to be published in a large-format, hard-cover book.  Current participants include such award-winning photographers as Benjamin Lowy, Khaled Hasan, Brent Stirton, Edwin Koo, Paolo Woods and Andrea Diefenbach.  We are also pleased to announce that the international edition of The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, has agreed to be The Other Hundred’s official media partner.

The implication of many of the rich lists and articles put out by the media is that being rich is the only way to succeed or live a life of meaning. We would like to show that not being rich is both normal and nothing to be ashamed of. The fact that 80% of the world lives on less than US$10 dollars a day does not stop most of them from living rich, full lives.  Because we are looking for photographs that capture this reality, we do not want the photo-book to be full solely of images of suffering, conflict, starvation or disease. Instead, we would like to engage our audience by capturing both the struggles and the successes of The Other Hundred.

Jury
The jury will be comprised of project director Chandran Nair, editor-in-chief Simon Cartledge, photography director Stefen Chow and three world-renowned jurors who have been invited on the basis of their expertise, global viewpoint and interest in the goals of The Other Hundred project: Ruth Eichhorn, Richard Hsu and Stephen Wilkes.

Submission Guidelines
Submissions may be a single photograph or a series of photographs. This is a global endeavor, and we welcome submissions from all over the world.

  • Be taken with a minimum 12 megapixel camera, preferably DSLR
  • Have a dimension of 1000 pixels on the longer side (Should your photo(s) be selected by our jury, we will ask for you to re-submit your highest-resolution version of the photo(s))
  • Be no larger than 500 kb per file
  • Have either an Adobe or sRGB color profile
  • Be part of a set of between 1-10 images
  • Be free of excessive digital manipulation
  • Must be taken after December 31, 2008, but images taken in 2012 and 2013 are preferred

*We realize that excellent photographs can be taken by those without access to the best equipment. We welcome submissions taken with compact digital cameras, film cameras, or camera phones. However, as we need to determine if the images are print quality, we ask that photographers using other cameras submit their highest resolution image.

Submitting your photo(s) is simple! Upload your photograph(s) via Facebook or Email them to submissions@theotherhundred.com. If you are planning to submit a series of images, we advise that you submit via email. Please be sure to include the following:

  • An explicatory text of 50-250 words, providing background and context for your photo.
  • Your name, email, phone number and location
  • Location where the photograph was taken
  • Date the photograph was taken (photographs must be taken after December 31, 2008, but images taken in 2012 and 2013 are preferred)
  • Name of subject(s), if possible

Read more about what we’re looking for in FAQ.  Sample submissions can be found here.

Only submissions with all of the above information provided will be considered complete. Unfortunately, we cannot accept submissions by regular mail.

In April 2013, the final 100 photographs will be chosen by our panel of judges. Winning entries will receive a complimentary copy of the book, an honorarium of US$300 and be featured in the published The Other Hundred hardcover book. Additional interviews with the photographer may be conducted during the editorial process to flesh out the story behind the photo for use in the published hardcover.”
