Host: Santa Fe Photographic Workshops
Where: Santa Fe, New Mexico
This workshop is designed to provide serious photographers with insights and practical knowledge to navigate and access today’s diverse marketplace. A portfolio of images and overview of professional experience will be reviewed for consideration of participation.
Mary Virginia Swanson will discuss the following topics through illustrated lectures:
- The fine print collecting market through galleries, art consultants and online sales venues
- Market research and strategies to reach your target audience(s).
- Effective website design and content to effectively reach your audience.
- The importance of promotional materials in multiple formats to clearly convey your brand.
- The value of investing in juried exhibitions, portfolio reviews and other industry events.
- The role of a publication in advancing your career.
- Understanding commercial licensing of your fine art images, and how to assess value for granting these rights.
In addition to classroom sessions, Mary Virginia will lead participants on special site visits with industry professionals in the gallery, museum and publishing arenas.

June 13-19, Charlottesville, VA: LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph

The LOOK3 FESTIVAL OF THE PHOTOGRAPH features artist presentations and exhibitions by legendary photographers, as well as outdoor projections, community events, and educational initiatives. Everything takes place along Charlottesville’s historic pedestrian corridor known as the “Downtown Mall”, and at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. LOOK3’s world-class exhibition program is free and open to the public, as is the Friday Evening Projections and many special events.

These artists address issues including preserving natural history, wildlife sustainability, global migration, community activism in America, our National Parks, sexual abuse against women in the military, and celebration of youth culture.
LOOK3 EDU will offer educational seminars focusing on creativity and entrepreneurship. Photographers at all levels, as well as instructors of photography, will benefit from the presentations by key industry leaders. Student passes are available.
- Tuesday evening, June 14th, PDN is bringing its celebrated “PDN 30 Emerging Photographers Panel” to LOOK3 for the first time.
- Wednesday, June 15th, a full day of programming is dedicated to “Creativity Meets Technology.” Moderated by James Estrin of the NY Times’ Lens Blog, the audience will be guided through the diverse range of opportunities to create, share and publish work today.
- Thursday, June 16th, a new program, ARTISTS: MEET YOUR MARKETS offers a roster of speakers in the morning who will address the diverse paths to generate income from your work (gallerist, magazine photo editor, museum curator, photobook publisher, media company, advertising agency art buyer, licensing agency, in-house corporate curator, corporate art consultants and more).
- Thursday afternoon during the new LOOK3 PITCH, these professionals will be joined by an expanded group of colleagues for scheduled meetings with artists to discuss their work in relation to particular businesses.
“FOCUS ON PHOTOBOOKS” includes the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation Photobook Awards Short List, Blurb Book Salon and The Photobook in Practice from the Indie Photobook Library. Free Community Events include a Print Share evening at the launch of the Festival (6/13), PDN 30’s Emerging Photographer Panel (6/14), an evening projection at Telos Pavilion (6/18), and FAMILY PHOTO DAY on Father’s Day (6/19) where family portraits will be taken and children can engage in activities related to photography.

MVS is in Charlottesville, Virginia through the end of June, the office will be closed during this time while her energies are fully dedicated to preparing for the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph, June 13-19, 2016. Join her at the Festival this year where they have a fantastic and diverse line up of photographers on the ticket and innovative educational programming for artists at all stages of their careers. She will help artists understand how to conduct effective research and connect with like-minded individuals, organization and foundations who share a passion for their subject. The types of monetary grants available through corporate & private foundations and government agencies will be discussed, as well as the value of partnering with a fiscal agent for foundation support, in-kind donations, and sponsorship.
