This workshop is designed to provide serious photographers with insights and practical knowledge to navigate and access today’s diverse marketplace. A portfolio of images and overview of professional experience will be reviewed for consideration of participation.
Mary Virginia Swanson will discuss the following topics through illustrated lectures:
- The fine print collecting market through galleries, art consultants and online sales venues
- Market research and strategies to reach your target audience(s).
- Effective website design and content to effectively reach your audience.
- The importance of promotional materials in multiple formats to clearly convey your brand.
- The value of investing in juried exhibitions, portfolio reviews and other industry events.
- The role of a publication in advancing your career.
- Understanding commercial licensing of your fine art images, and how to assess value for granting these rights.
In addition to classroom sessions, Mary Virginia will lead participants on special site visits with industry professionals in the gallery, museum and publishing arenas.

Sustaining and Presenting Your Long-Term Personal Project

Create a long-lasting personal presence within the world of photography in this elemental course, which teaches you the necessary steps to establishing your work and getting it in front of the right people. This workshop is designed to help photographers engaged in producing a self-assigned personal project and to to understand the process of securing support (financial and in-kind) as well as identifying appreciative audiences for their work. These formats range from online to the printed page and the exhibition wall. You define the project and its target audience, edit images, learn to navigate fundraising, and present yourself and your work to industry professionals representing multiple markets.
Activities range from classroom lectures and editing sessions to on-site fundraising research at a nearby regional branch of the Foundation Center. Portfolios and websites are reviewed and analyzed.
Media & Techniques
Students should bring images printed in small scale for ease in editing (4×6, 5×7 or 8×10), a laptop for writing and research coursework, and any existing or planned promotional pieces and/or book dummies or previous publications if applicable.
