In this visually rich presentation, Mary Virginia Swanson outlines steps that every photographic project should take as it heads through production to publication/exhibition. What early research can facilitate access and secure the funding and equipment needed? How can you maximize time and funds? What do you need to know about target audience(s) to determine your final product: limited edition handcrafted prints? Lower cost printing/surfaces? Banners for public art display and ease in touring an exhibition? How do you choose an exhibition venue, prepare strategic proposals and suggest educational programming that fits each venue? Is a publication of the work desirable? What should it cost, and which publishers should you approach? Should you license your work? If so, how do you identify buyers and inform them of availability.

This Super Session is available as an add-on to your regular Summit registration for $75 and can be paid at the door. Summit registration is NOT required to attend the super Sessions.

“This 5th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition will meld the region’s rich concentration of photographic artists with an influx of national photographers in a juried competition for over $5000 in cash prizes. In previous years, artists from more than 35 states have submitted work to be juried. Typically, between 60-70 works are selected for exhibit in the exhibition. The 2019 juror is Dan Leers, Curator of Photography, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA. The Public Opening & Awards Ceremony will take place Saturday, April 6, 2019,  from 6-8 pm. The exhibition will run from April 6 through Saturday, April 27.

Application Requirements and Restrictions
Maximum 6 entries per photographer. (No maximum per category.)
All artwork must be for sale, have been created by the submitting artist within the past three (3) years, and may not have been previously exhibited at the Allegany Arts Council’s Galleries.

Categories and Descriptions

  • Category 1: Color
    Two-dimensional photographic works of art printed in color on any medium/substrate (paper, canvas, metal, etc.) and using any process (wet darkroom, computer, etc), max 48” in width, professionally presented and wired for hanging.
  • Category 2: Monochrome/Black and White
    Two-dimensional photographic works of art printed in black and white or monochrome on any medium/substrate (paper, canvas, metal, etc.) and using any process (wet darkroom, computer, etc), max 48” in width, professionally presented and wired for hanging.
  • Category 3: Experimental
    Three-dimensional artwork comprised of one or more of the artist’s photographic images. Texture on the surface of a two-dimensional image is not enough to include it in this category. The artwork can combine other media, but must be fundamentally photography-based. The work must be ready for display; free-standing, placed on a pedestal, or wired for hanging. Overall size may not exceed 48 inches in any dimension and weight may not exceed 30lbs. If needed, standard electrical AC power (60Hz, 120V) is available. To best represent the work, we encourage the artist to submit a short video under 5MB or a single image incorporating multiple views of the artwork. This category is about presenting photography in a non-traditional way.

“ELIGIBILITY
CPW’s annual Photography Now exhibition celebrates the plurality of photography. All photographic techniques and approaches are welcome, from analog to digital, fine art, directorial, narrative, documentary, political, social justice, identity, portrait, landscape, still life, mixed media incorporating photography, photographic installations, digital imaging and collage! Submissions are accepted from all over the world. Professional, amateur, and student artists are all welcome to apply. Over $2,500 in prizes will be awarded!

  • Maurice Berger is a writer, cultural historian, and curator whose work focuses on the intersection of race and visual culture. He is research professor and chief curator at the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
  • Marvin Heiferman, a curator and writer, has organized exhibitions, web-based projects, and publications about photography and visual culture for institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, Smithsonian Institution, International Center of Photography, Whitney Museum of American Art, P.S. 1 Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, and the New Museum.

About Aperture Portfolio Prize
“The purpose of the Aperture Portfolio Prize is to identify trends in contemporary photography and highlight artists whose work deserves greater recognition. When choosing the first prize winner and runners up, Aperture’s editorial and curatorial staff look for innovative bodies of work that haven’t been widely seen in major publications or exhibition venues.

The first prize winner will be published in Aperture magazine and will receive a $3,000 cash prize and exhibition in New York. The winner and up to four runners up will be featured in an online gallery on aperture.org. All finalists are announced in the foundation’s e-newsletter, which reaches fifty thousand subscribers across the globe, including curators, critics, and members of the photography community. The winner and runners up may also be presented the opportunity to participate in the Aperture Foundation limited edition print program.

The Aperture Portfolio Prize jury is comprised of Aperture’s experienced editors and curatorial staff. “The First Book Award is a photography publishing prize open to photographers who have not previously had a book published by a third party publishing house (this does not include self-published print on demand projects).

The award was established in 2012 to support emerging photographers. The call for submissions emphasises a predilection for projects conceived in book form: works that find a voice through the book.

From 2012 to 2018, the award was not an open submission; each year, a diverse array of international nominators were asked to recommend suitable projects.

Submissions for the First Book Award 2019 are not limited to nominated projects and the award is open to all emerging artists who wish to submit a coherent book project. Please see the Submission Guidelines page for further details.

Previous winners include: Anne Sophie Merryman (2012), Paul Salveson (2013), Joanna Piotrowska (2014), Ciarán Óg Arnold (2015), Sofia Borges (2016) and Emmanuelle Andrianjafy (2017).

GUIDELINES

The First Book Award is a photography prize for photographers and artists who have not previously had their work published by a third party publishing house. This does not include self-published books or print-on-demand projects.

  • Submissions must consist of coherent book projects and not portfolios of images in book form.
  • Any text within the book must be supplied with an English translation.
  • All submissions must be received as paper book dummies. Digital submissions in the form of PDFs, ebooks or apps will not be considered.
  • All submissions must either be unpublished or self-published book projects. Books that have already been published by a third party publishing house will not be considered.
  • Submissions received after January 21, 2019 will not be considered for the prize.

Book dummies will only be returned if packaging and prepaid postage is included. Books will be returned in April 2019, after the shortlist has been announced. Neither MACK nor any of the sponsors will be held responsible for loss or damage to books submitted.

AWARD

  • A panel of judges will together assess all submitted dummies, shortlisting ten. From the shortlist, a single project will be chosen as the winner to be published by MACK.
  • The winning project will be announced at the opening of Photo London at Somerset House, London, in May 2019 and the book will be published in time for that announcement.
  • The winning artist will exhibit their work in a special display devoted to their work at Photo London 2019, in an exhibition to coincide with the award announcement.

JUDGES

  • Sarah Allen
    Sarah Allen is a photography specialist. She is Assistant Curator at Tate Modern where she curates displays and exhibitions as well as researching acquisitions for the international collection. Her most recent project was Shape of Light: 100 Years of Photography and Abstract Art. She has also curated the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize nominated presentation of Mark Ruwedel at Tate (2018) as well as Martin Parr (2018), Workers Photography (2018), Daido Moriyama (2017), Kaveh Golestan (2017) and Gyorgy Kepes (2017). She has a specialist focus on photobooks and is curator of the Martin Parr photobook collection.
  • Emma Bowkett
    Emma Bowkett is Director of Photography at the Financial Times FT Weekend Magazine. Joining in 2009, she was integral to the small creative team who reworked the visual language of the magazine for the 2010 re-launch. Emma has curated exhibitions for the Triennale der Photographie Hamburg, Peckham 24 in London and in 2018 co-curated PhotoEast festival. She is a visiting university lecturer, and regularly participates at international portfolio reviews, festivals, art fairs and awards.
  • Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa
    Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa is a photographer and a writer who has contriubted essays to publications by Vanessa Winship, George Georgiou, Rosalind Fox Solomon, Marton Perlaki and Paul Graham. He has been an artist-in residence at Light Work, guest edited the Aperturn Photobook Review, and written for Aperture, FOAM, the Barbican, The Photographer’s Gallery and Rutgers University Press. His debut monograph, One Wall a Web, was published by ROMA Publications in 2018. He has lectured at Yale, Cornell, New York University and The New School.
  • Polly Fleury
    Polly Fleury is Director of Special Projects at the Wilson Centre for Photography where she works closely with museums, artists, galleries and publishers bringing historical and contemporary photography to public view.
  • Michael Mack
    Michael Mack is the publisher of MACK.”

  • 1000 pixels on the longest side saved in JPEG format at 72 ppi.

“It takes time, passion and obsession to make great work. But you also need the opportunity to have your work seen in the first place. And since we at Lens believe only the quality of work should matter — not your connections or bank account — we are again bringing together 160 talented photographers with 75 top photo editors, publishers, curators, gallery owners and video producers, for the 7th annual New York Portfolio Review on March 30 and 31 in New York City.

Applications are now open for the free (as always) review, which is produced by The New York Times Lens column, the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York and United Photo Industries. Participation is open to anyone over 18 years old, and all types of photography will be considered. But remember, the deadline is Dec. 10 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

Now a mainstay of photo events in the United States, the review convenes the photographic community to meet, trade ideas, help each other — and have fun.

The first session, on Saturday, March 30, will be for photographers 21 and older. Each participant will receive six private critiques. The second session, on Sunday, March 31, will be solely for photographers 18 to 27 and will consist of at least four private critiques for each participant, as well as free workshops on how to best present, promote and publish photographs. We will screen all applicants and choose 100 participants for Saturday and 60 for Sunday.”
